Irish Sea freight woes: Plight of Caernarfon business owner raised in Commons

THE UK Government says it’s working to avoid further “rigmarole” and Irish Sea red tape after it was revealed that some Welsh-bound products are having to be shipped via a 1,400-mile three-state detour following Brexit.
The plight of one Caernarfon business owner was raised in the Commons on Wednesday after facing eye watering hikes in the cost of deliveries due to transport companies avoiding Holyead Port.
While the 170 mile journey between Neil Alcock’s Seiont Nurseries and his supplier in Kilkenny used to take just 12 hours via Holyhead, such deliveries now take up to four days and necessitate travel via France, Belgium, Holland and England due to hauliers being unwilling to risk being held up at Holyhead or Dublin due to paperwork errors.

Anglesey councillors fears that Holyhead port 'in danger of rapid decline'

Holyhead Port. Screengrab from Google Streetview.
One of Anglesey’s major employers “is in danger of rapid decline,” a Holyhead councillor has claimed, warning over the potential impact of trade barriers with Ireland on the town’s port.
Despite being the second busiest “roll-on roll-off” port in the UK, Cllr Bob Llewelyn Jones claimed that the disruption caused by the impending end of the Brexit transition period could see a “big reduction” in Irish Sea traffic travelling through Holyhead.
With over 1,000 people said to be directly employed within the port and several more dependant on the supply chain, plans to enforce border controls on the Irish side from January 1 have led to the current situation being described as a “worrying time” for the town.
