Pedestrian crossing near Portlaoise church is ‘unsafe’ Reporter: '); A pedestrian crossing near the Catholic church in Portlaoise is unsafe and should be moved, local councillors have said. The crossing at the junction to New Road and James Fintan Lalor Avenue is dangerous, says Cllr Catherine Fitzgerald. “Anyone who doesn’t know the area, when you are driving from the church to the Kyle centre, you are completely blind. If someone is on the pedestrian crossing it is very dangerous,” she said. She tabled a motion to the April meeting of Portlaoise Municipal District to make it safer. “It is just too near the avenue,” agreed Cllr Noel Tuohy, supporting the motion.

Two pedestrian crossings on the Dublin road in Portlaoise 'not safe' Reporter: '); '); Every junction, crossing, path and bike lane on the old Dublin Road in Portlaoise is being reviewed with an eye to creating a safe Masterplan for the road’s future. The news was announced at the February meeting of Portlaoise Muncipal District, after two pedestrian crossings on the road received complaints about their dangers. The crossing at Colliers Lane and The Killeshin Hotel are unsafe says Cllr Catherine Fitzgerald. “The Colliers Lane roundabout is not sufficient for the traffic it gets. This is an ongoing issue. A huge number of residents are coming out from Colliers Lane and Hawthorne Drive using this area. It’s not safe, either crossing. A lot of people are driving straight through. I believe we really need to look at it again from a safety point of view,” she said.
Campaign urged on 'disgusting' dog litter problem in Portlaoise Reporter: '); '); The "absolutely disgusting" dog litter problem in Portlaoise will "not be accepted any longer" says a councillor. A town wide campaign to make Portlaoise dog litter free is needed says Cllr Catherine Fitzgerald. "Some people just bring out their dogs to do their business at certain times and don't care about others," she said. Her call was made at the February meeting of Portlaoise Municipal District, where it was heard that one person has been fined so far in 2021 for leaving their dog's waste on the street. Cllr Fitzgerald said that she has never received as many complaints on the issue, including from a wheelchair user who ended up getting dog waste on his hand.

Laois County Council is putting on display their design for a pedestrian/cycle link from the Portlaoise Southern Circular road, beside Summerhill school campus, through the People’s park exiting near the church.
