Public 'should get say' before Bedford Place decision made

A CITY councillor said there should be a public consultation over plans to reopen a busy Southampton road.
Bargate councillor Sarah Bogle said Bedford Place should remain car-free throughout the summer and a public consultation should follow before any final decision is taken.
Cllr Fitzhenry, leader of the Conservatives, said a public consultation has already been held and the temporary scheme was designed to support businesses recover from the pandemic.
He said businesses only will be consulted again on the road closure.
But he said the entire transport plan will be reviewed and “if there are concerns raised about certain areas including Bedford Place we will be reviewing that.” ....

Echo readers say reopening Bedford Place is wrong decision

Some traders said the move was positive, but others said it was a total shambles .
But, after winning control of Southampton City Council at the weekend, the Tories are keen to put their stamp on the city, and leader Cllr Dan Fitzhenry told the Echo that he wants to reopen Bedford Place to motorists.

As you can see above, 1,692 (63%) of the 2,686 people to vote say they think the decision to reopen the road is not the correct one.
However, 886 (33%) agree with the plans, and say they want the road to reopen to traffic. ....

BEDFORD PLACE: Petition launched to keep Southampton road car-free

Local traders told the Echo that they lost the passing trade due to the road closure.
On Saturday, Conservative Cllr Dan Fitzhenry, said his plan is to reopen the road but leave the closure on Carlton Place.
He said the move would be based on data collated over the past months but he pledegd to consult with businesses first.
It comes as the Conservatives won control of Southampton City Council in this year s elections.
The petition launched by the Liberal Democrats has so far received 227 signatures.
The party said: The coronavirus pandemic has been a difficult time, but one of the best things to come out of is a greater appreciation of our shared spaces. Pedestrianisation, like in Bedford Place, has produced vibrant local spaces for our community and allows local businesses in these areas to grow and thrive. ....

He also said Bedford Place is set to be reopened to traffic.
Some traders previously called on the council to reopen the road saying the move had turned the busy city neighbourhood into a “zombie apocalypse”.
Asked whether the road closure will remain in place, Cllr Fitzhenry said: “No. Our plan will be to reopen Bedford Place.
The Carlton Place element that has got approval from the traders will stay but we will consult the traders on both Bedford Place and Carlton Place first.
We have their information from the last six months, our plan currently based on that information is to reopen Bedford Place but we will consult those traders first to make sure that that works for them.” ....
