Calls have been made for the Greater Exeter area to get a metro mayor akin to Manchester or Bristol to get things done and drive infrastructure improvements across the region.
Cllr Paul Millar floated the idea at a recent East Devon District Council Strategic Planning Committee as the best way to get the ‘first class infrastructure’ that the region needs in order to flourish and prosper.
His suggestion would see the authorities of Exeter, East Devon, Mid Devon and Teignbridge – who were working together on a combined Greater Exeter Strategic Plan until it collapsed last summer – prepare a shared vision for devolution as they begin work on their joint, non-statutory strategic plan. ....

Honiton Swimming Pool saved by EDDC cash injection

Much needed refurbishment work to make Honiton Swimming Pool a ‘pleasing, pleasant, hygienic venue’ has been agreed.
East Devon District Council’s cabinet on Wednesday (October 28) night heard that the swimming pool was ‘in a very poor state’ and that if nothing was done, the pool may have to close.
Councillors approved a £380,000 spending on measures that would provide a permanent solution to the current damp ingress issues. Steve Pratten, Interim Principal Surveyor, told councillors this required the existing floor and part of the wall finishes and underlining screed and plaster to be removed, along with the wall and floor tiles, sundry fittings and fixtures such as WCs, toilet partitions and lockers etc. He said: “The condition on the reception area, changing rooms and associated other rooms, excluding the pool hall, at Honiton Swimming Pool has continued to deteriorate.
