The Windsor Star is able to print about 30,000 newspapers in just one hour, according to union officials representing workers at the publication’s Starway Printing Facility. But that all ended Friday, following a decision from publication owner Postmedia to relocate printing efforts of the Windsor-based paper to Toronto.
The national president of Unifor decried the role of investment companies in labour relations Friday as she visited Windsor to support striking workers at Windsor Salt and soon-to-be laid-off workers at the Windsor Star printing press.
The final day of local printing for the Windsor Star is just days away and with that, the loss of more than 75 jobs at the Starway plant as the newspaper printing operations move to Toronto.
The Windsor Star is set to see its last locally-printed edition roll off the press in one week’s time, with Postmedia announcing late last month it would be closing the newspaper’s local production plant come March 3.
The decision to close the plant was made by the paper's parent company, Postmedia.
