/ Gov. Asa Hutchinson signs Act 18 of 2021 as Arkansas State University System President Chuck Welch looks on. The Act expands the Board of Trustees from five members to seven. LITTLE ROCK Gov. Asa Hutchinson today signed Act 18 of the 93rd General Assembly of Arkansas, which officially makes Henderson State University in Arkadelphia the seventh institution of the Arkansas State University System. Act 18 also expands the ASU System Board of Trustees from five members to seven. The additional members will be appointed by the governor. The transition was previously approved by the Henderson Board of Trustees on Nov. 21, 2019, the ASU System Board of Trustees on Dec. 6, 2019, and the Higher Learning Commission on Nov. 5. Henderson, founded in 1890, will remain a separately accredited institution and becomes the second four-year institution in the ASU System. ....
Dr. W. Joseph Claflin, Jamestown, ND passed away on December 7, 2020 at the age of 87 after a brief devastating battle with COVID-19. He was born August 21, 1933 in Mondovi, Wisconsin to Oral Gaard and Cleo Jeannette Claflin (Nyre). Joe graduated from Aberdeen High School, attended North Dakota State University, graduated from Northern State Teachers; College, Aberdeen, SD in 1955, majoring in Biology. He played football at NDSU and was an All-Conference football player at Northern State Teachers’ College. He married the love of his life E. Maurine Lewis in June 1955. Joe began his 50-year teaching career in Kensington, MN, and Watertown High School, Watertown, SD while pursuing his Master’s Degree, receiving his Master of Arts Degree in Zoology and Botany from the University of SD in 1962. ....
