The Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike has reportedly pledged N600 million to the Akwa Ibom State Government in support of the building of a hospital in the state.
The hospital project – Akwa Ibom State University Teaching Hospital – is located in Awa, Onna Local Government Area of the state.
Punch newspaper quoted Mr Wike’s media aide, Kelvin Ebiri, as saying that the governor made the pledge on Wednesday while performing a groundbreaking ceremony for the hospital project.
The hospital project is a partnership between the Akwa Ibom Government and Bua Group which announced an initial support of N2.5 billion for the project, the Akwa Ibom State Government said in a statement. ....

Rivers pensioners beg Governor Wike for outstanding N70 billion liabilities

Pensioners in Rivers State have appealed to Governor Nyesom Wike to approve the payment of the outstanding pension liabilities of N70 billion.
Mr. Wike on Wednesday said the state spends not less than N1.8 billion monthly for pensioners’ payment.
But findings reveal that Mr. Wike is owing a lot of pensioners’ gratuities and monthly pension despite the governor’s claim of paying pensioners.
A retiree who exited civil service after 35-year career told newsmen on Friday that he had neither received gratuity nor pension since bowing out in September 2020 despite completing biometric documentation.
“Not even the monthly pension nor the gratuity has been paid me. Besides that, I wasn’t even paid my 4 years’ arrears as a director. I was still earning Deputy director’s salary from 2016 – 2020 until when I left”, the retiree who pleaded anonymity for fear of retribution lamented. ....

Governor Nyesom Wike of Rivers State, Wednesday, pledged a N500 million donation for the rebuilding of a burnt market in Sokoto State.
Mr Wike’s pledge, on behalf of the Rivers State government, is coming at a time his administration is yet to resolve a lingering dispute over the non-payment of pensions and gratuity to thousands of retired civil servants in the oil-rich state.
The money, according to a report by the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), is for the rebuilding of the Sokoto Central Market destroyed by fire on Tuesday. ....

As many Nigerians and citizens across the world are celebrating the festive period, although in lockdowns due to the COVID-19 pandemic, pensioners in some states across the country are lamenting that they had not been paid their pensions and/or gratuities by various state governments.
Some of the state chapters of the pensioners’ unions said this development had caused them to celebrate the festivities in suffering, with some regretting that they had been abandoned after serving the government for many years.
Based on this development, pensioners in Edo State said they would resume their protest in January to draw more attention to their plight. ....
