For Lucia Miranda in Center, it started with what felt like a cold.
She was caring for her father, who has cancer, and didn t want to get her dad sick. She decided to go get tested for the coronavirus, just to be sure.
She remembers the exact date, October 27, when the Rio Grande Public Health Department called to tell her she was positive for COVID-19. ....

Distrustful Of Suncor And Government, A Commerce City Nonprofit Wants To Monitor The Air Itself


After years of air pollution releases at the Suncor oil and gas refinery in Commerce City, Colo., Olga Gonzalez is glad to see plans for real-time air monitors in the largely Latinx neighborhoods around the facility.
She isn t sure people in the community are ready to trust the company, the state or the city to run those networks.
“Our own independent monitors would inspire greater trust amongst our community,” Gonzalez said. “That’s what we re trying to do here.”
Gonzalez is the executive director of Cultivando, a Commerce City nonprofit that helps residents get involved in local politics. The organization is now bidding to build air monitors to track pollutants escaping the Suncor facility, Colorado’s only oil and gas refinery. ....

A third vaccine is now arriving in Colorado, but before the first dose has been injected, Johnson & Johnson’s version is already facing opposition over how it was made, and whether it represents something like a consolation prize for diverse communities where vaccines have been in short supply.
The most recent resistance comes from Catholic Church bishops in the U.S. who issued guidance earlier this week recommending Catholics avoid the Johnson & Johnson vaccine. ....

El Paso County Will Vaccinate 1,500 Essential Workers And People Over 60 This Weekend

Colorado begins a new phase of COVID-19 vaccinations today, expanding access to grocery store and agricultural workers, people over 60, and people between 16-59 with two or more high-risk health conditions. Those can include cancer, diabetes, pregnancy and some heart conditions.
This weekend, the El Paso County Public Health building is the site of a pop-up clinic, at which 1,500 people will get shots.
Powell said while those appointments filled up in a matter of hours, the county is working diligently to connect eligible people with vaccine access. ....
