When Josh Gattis was hired this space got really excited for the incorporation of RPOs into Michigan's power running game. The very first spring game I was like "look at all the backside defenders who can't pursue the run!" The first game I was giddy over the RPO reads that had been slapped on to every one of Michigan's base run plays, especially their meatiest of meaty running plays, Pin & Pull. (I also spent way too long drawing on my videos back then) There were a couple, especially early, but what that mostly became for this program was a gimmick. If they did a...
The UFR Glossary. Substitution Notes: Penn State spent most of the day with multiple TEs on the field but used them primarily as receivers. Michigan was answering with nickel personnel. DT snaps were ~90% Smith, 60% Jenkins, 40% Graham, 25% Benny and a few appearances of Grant but not Goode. Edge saw more Okie than Harrell and lots more Upshaw and Moore, with McGregor not playing till the last drive. LB was Colson/Barrett with Mullings in on a couple of 2nd half passing downs and Rolder playing late. Will Johnson got more snaps when Green got hurt but he returned; Turner was omnipresent. Sainr...
The UFR Glossary. Substitution Notes: Stuck to nickel personnel as IU was in 11 or 20 (extra scatback RB in place of a TE) all game. Starting DTs took most of the game with Graham and Benny on lengthy drives, and a little bit of Grant and Goode. DE was a solid rotation of Morris/Harrell/Okie/Moore, with bits of Upshaw (also at DT) and McGregor. LB was Colson and Barrett most of the way but lots of subbing for both Mullings and Rolder. Sainristil was present almost the whole game, with Paige and Moore and Turner and Green. Backup rotations for W.Johnson and Quinten Johnson, who was out there ev...
Things discussed: Craig opens the door for Seth to go off on stuff you can read about on the John Hawks blog. Iowa's offense isn't caveman, it's an Australopithecus that evolved in a different direction. It's ugly football, but Michigan was correct to turtle into 1950s football and run out the clock. Seth: Makes a big difference that they scored some touchdowns. The first time Iowa walked down and tried to sell out against something they get gutted by the Ronnie Bell end-around. They were playing soft and conservative, Michigan ground them down like they did Washington last...
