Jupiter. the massive object could explain why a barrage of comets comes from that direction. we ll post the story about the au auto-correct murder, which i thought would win, and mcdonald s weddings at cnn.com/ali. time for the xyz of it. president obama submitted his federal budget proposal for 2012 and the battle begins. the budget is a reflection of the president s priorities for the year going forward. what he wants to spend more on, what he thinks the country can spend less on. earlier he told reporters the federal budget has to do two things, live within its means and invest in the future . the president s proposal and for now it is just a proposal takes a big bite out of some domestic spending. the idea is to slash federal deficits, that s the difference, the shortfall, between what the government takes in and what it spends by over $1 trillion over the decade. now, he plans to do that through a combination of spending cuts ....

reporter: this thing is 200 million miles away, so we don t have to worry about it. it s not on a collision course. that s good. reporter: or coming anywhere close to the earth so we re okay there. and apart from being just really cool, what good do these pictures actually do us here on earth? reporter: you know, here s what s interesting. from nasa s point of view it shows they can do space missions on the cheap. the reason i say this is this stardust spacecraft that took these pictures actually had a first mission where it orbited another comet called wild, gathered dust and debris out of the coma of that comet and brought that debris back to earth, dropped it off in another spacecraft and then was given this mission, all for about $350 million. that s cheap when you consider one space shuttle flight is $500 million. and from a science standpoint, they are going to get an idea of what happens to these comets as they come around the sun and how ....

But they still have so much new data to analyze. and this was the first time a comet was ever visited twice by a spacecraft. they have lots of analysis to do over the course of the next several years. the pictures are really spectacular from 200 million miles away. pretty neat stuff. it is neat. does this mean that there could be a giant planet basically hidden in our solar system? this is another story all together. what happened was there is some thought that way out at the edge of the solar system in the oort cloud, i m not making that up, and it s filled with tens of thousands of comets in this oort cloud, that some sign ties believe that perhaps obscured in that cloud there may be a massive planet. something like three or four times the size of jupiter. they don t know for sure if it s out there. there is a telescope. ....

Earth, this is the closest you will ever get to a comet called hartley 2. a little ship called deep impact came within 400 miles of it, way out here 13 million miles in space. there s no tail. the comet is so far from the sun that it s frozen, mostly ice and dust. but those streamers on the sides are places where ice is vaporizing in the sunlight. they act as jets, making the comet tumble. not just simple rotation. it s probably doing this as well. it may be doing this. it may be doing this. all on top of that. reporter: scientists say comets are important because they may in a way be our ancestors. it is possible that when the earth was young, the solar system was much more crowded than it is today. and comets crashing into the new planet brought much of the water we have now, and perhaps also the chemical building blocks of life. so take a good look at comet hartley 2. ....

It may be our great great grand parents. ned potter, abc news, kennedy space center, florida. it really is beautiful to see. they re saying that this is actually one of the smallest comets to actually be photographed, which is no easy task to get something like this captured on film. no, it s interesting. recently i went to the museum of natural history, so they have a lot of information and obviously exhibits dealing with space and comets and meteorites. you just really realize how insignificant we are when you see stories like this. and how cool it is that we re able to capture these and sort of document everything that we can, and what s happening up there in the outer beyond, you know what i mean? it s kind of a reminder most of us choose not to acknowledge. we ll be right back. ....
