members dead set saying they want their way and pushing for deeper spending cuts and adding tougher immigration restrictions in a must pass bill. and things the senate and the white house will not expect. what johnson agreed to here is a short-term stop-gap bill until early march. back in november, he said there would be no more short-term stopgap. he's trying to move ahead here given the division in his conference. i spent last week talking about what happened to members and the ones who supported kevin mccarthy and said the efforts to push him out made no sense because they are left in precisely the same place they were amid mccarthy's ouster. >> there was flo sense in getting rid of kevin mccarthy. and so those members that are now thinking that things are going to change and if they get somebody new, you have to face

what do you think of that strategy? is it likely to work? >> i was never partial to that strategy because it is divisive. even if you manage to win, are you win is a divided country. if you go back to president clinton's reelection it was all about winning in a way that you genuinely had leadership of the country. but that seems to be the best they've got, works better than anything else which i think he has got to make a compromise on immigration. that is she was bleeding him. inflation seems to be getting somewhat better, not much he can do about it other than agree to some spending cuts. immigration is the issue that he's got to do something about because he's losing more voters each day. paul: you think it will be immigration?

agitating about the same things against the speaker. why should we think that they won't kick him out. they don't have an alternative? they didn't have an alternative last time? >> a personal grievance, though, does mike johnson have the enemies that mccarthy had? >> reporter: he does not. that's the one thing that's in his favor. if you removal the personal grievance, johnson effectively enacted the same spending deal that mccarthy did except for $16 billion in spending cuts. i don't know that they'll try to kick him out, but i think it's certainly in the realm of possibility, and, listen, katy, the bigger thing here is if johnson walks away, he says he's not walking away or the deal remains in place, a passive statement about the spending deal. you know, i don't -- it's a very confusing situation. i mean, the government needs to be funded by next friday. if the deal stays in place, it's going to be the same spending he

this congress when they're not happy. they're trying to figure out any accommodation from those members who have stopped all legislation in its tracks. the big question, can they avoid a government shutdown by the end of next week? that's what speaker johnson is trying to avoid. can they avoid one given the demands for new border restrictions and deeper spending cuts? >> the comments from speaker johnson to you are eerily similar to what we heard from kevin mccarthy over and over again and eventually led to his ouster. thank you, manu. first lady jill biden is speaking out against house republicans and donald trump. she did not hold back when it came to efforts under way to hold hunter biden in contempt of congress. listen. >> what they're doing to hunter is cruel, and i'm really proud

>> they say no and this would be on gop hardliners if the government shutdown next why? we had>> an agreement. >> speaker johnson says he is not more spending cuts, $30 million more than what democrats wanted and we are sticking to the deal that was struck. >> it is not, it is 1.6 extreme numbers using side deals and gimmicks to expand the size of the government well over the ominous spending bill. let's be clear, this is a big give for me to say i would consider that when the texas border is wide open as i want to see our borders secured first for me to say i will consider a cr through the end of the year, so we can govern but that is a gift because texas is under assault by our department of homeland security who was grilled for lying to me

speaker's chair, but his right flank is cause a host of other headaches and problems for the speaker. >> it is really interesting, his strategy here, because those are the same voices you say he can't ignore, but they're the ones as you said pushed out kevin mccarthy from the speakership. they said because he tried to keep the government open and did not seek spending cuts, he should be out as speaker. since then, he has moved to keep the government out without seeking cuts. he has moved a defense bill, cut a deal with democrats that essentially he used a process to sirkm venlt the right flank to get it passed, and he may do that again on this government funding bill, essentially pushing the right flank to de decide, working with democrats to get this through. how do you think that's going to go over? >> not well. manu, you know these people as well as i do in terms of the freedom caucus and the hard right. they're going to be furious if johnson works with democrats to fund the government. he's boxed himself into a corner because he said he's not going
