However, the Freestone County Sheriff’s Office reported that the noise wasn’t anything that people should be worried about. “I’m sure everyone heard the ‘explosion,’ stated a post on the Freestone County Sheriff’s Office Facebook page. “Everything is OK. That was Big Brown bringing down the two stacks as they continue takedown and cleanup of the mine.” ....

Officials plan to close streets as part of the project. Show MoreShow Less 2of3 The three smoke stacks at the former Dynegy Energy coal-fired power plant are tentatively set to fall on Sunday. Explosive charges will drop the stacks onto the property which is undergoing mediation. Unhealthy build-up lining the inside of the stacks are a potential health hazard and people should avoid the path of the dust as much as possible. The stacks are next to Illinois 143 in East Alton. The highway will be closed before demolition and remain closed following Sunday’s action to let workers also remove a covered coal conveyor belt which crosses all four lanes of traffic.
