On March 24, the Cabinet led by Jagan Mohan Reddy passed a resolution in the Assembly asking the Union government to provide Scheduled Caste (SC) status to Dalit Christians.
Dalits who have "ameliorated their social status" by converting to Christianity or Islam cannot claim to be backward since "backwardness based on untouchability is only prevalent in the Hindu society or its branches", the government said in an affidavit.
