HUD Accelerates Access to Puerto Rico for $8.2B in Disaster Relief Funds

The Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) announced the obligation of $8.2 billion in Community Development Block Grant Mitigation (CDBG-MIT) funds for Puerto Rico, along with the removal of onerous restrictions unique to Puerto Rico that limited the island’s access to CDBG-DR recovery funds that were allocated following Hurricane Maria in September 2017.
These actions are the latest in an ongoing whole-of-government effort by the Biden administration to support the island’s recovery and renewal.
“Since its first days, the Biden-Harris Administration has prioritized action to enable stronger recovery for Puerto Rico,” said HUD Secretary Marcia L. Fudge. “The actions taken by HUD today will unlock access to funds Puerto Rico needs to recover from past disasters and build resilience to future storms, while ensuring transparency and accountability. We are committed to an ongoing partnership with Puerto Rico to empower the island’s communities and help them build back better.”

Louisiana Receives $163 Million for Flood Mitigation Projects

Louisiana Receives $163 Million for Flood Mitigation Projects
U.S. Senator Bill Cassidy announced $163 million in federal funding for flood mitigation projects across Louisiana.
U.S. Senator Bill Cassidy announced $163 million in federal funding for several flood mitigation projects across Louisiana.
“Louisiana experienced devastating floods in recent years that accelerated the need to develop infrastructure projects for flood-prone communities,” said Dr. Cassidy in a press release on his website. “These funds deliver protection to residents and businesses and will considerably reduce the risk of flooding.”
The money released is part of the $1.2 billion in flood mitigation funding for Louisiana, which Cassidy secured from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) in 2019, according to the senator's website. Cassidy played a key role in getting the Community Development Block Grant Mitigation (CDBG-MIT) Program funded for the first time ever in the Bipartisan Budget Act of 2018.

HORRY COUNTY, S.C. (WMBF) – Terri Straka has lived in the Rosewood community for 26 years.
With every year, she said the rainy seasons have gotten worse, resulting in her home being flooded. Like many residents, Straka has grown tired from having to evacuate from the constant floodwaters in her neighborhood.
“So many people are struggling, Straka said. “Unless it’s happened to you and you’re a victim, you don’t understand. It’s not just simply packing up and moving away.”
