Iranian cyber group Pioneer Kitten sold access to hacked networks

A hacker group associated with the Iranian government is selling “access to compromised networks on an underground forum,” likely without Tehran’s blessing, according to research by threat intelligence firm CrowdStrike.
Why it matters: That these Iranian hackers were apparently caught trying to make money on the side may show the dangers of relying on likely underpaid contractors to conduct sensitive offensive cyber operations.
What’s happening: The group, which CrowdStrike has named “Pioneer Kitten,” has been active since 2017, with its last known activity occurring in July 2020. ....

Leary was named acting U.S. Attorney following the resignation of Charlie Peeler, the U.S. Attorney for the Middle District of Georgia. Leary previously served as the First Assistant U.S. Attorney since 2018.
Leary has served the citizens of the Middle District of Georgia as a prosecutor since 2012. Since joining the United States Attorney’s Office (USAO), he has worked as the office’s AntiTerrorism Advisory Council (ATAC) coordinator, its Computer Hacking and Intellectual Property (CHIP) prosecutor and as the First Assistant U.S. Attorney. ....

The bipartisan leaders of the Senate Armed Services Committee said they received “initial information” indicating the massive hack involving several U.S. federal agencies “has the hallmarks of a Russian intelligence operation.”
Republican Chairman Jim Inhofe of Oklahoma and Democratic ranking member Jack Reed of Rhode Island released a joint statement Thursday evening saying they had been made aware of new details related to the “significant, sophisticated, and ongoing cybersecurity intrusion against the United States.”
“There is still much we don’t know about the massive cyber hack that breached U.S. cyber defenses, including federal agencies and major private sector companies,” Inhofe and Reed said. “But we do know the cyber intrusion appears to be ongoing and has the ....

MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – Peter D. Leary was named Monday, as the Acting U.S. Attorney for the Middle District of Georgia. This comes after Charles Peeler resigned last week.
Acting U.S. Attorney Leary has served the citizens of the Middle District of Georgia as a prosecutor since 2012.
Since joining the United States Attorney’s Office (USAO), he has worked as the office’s Anti-Terrorism Advisory Council (ATAC) coordinator, its Computer Hacking and Intellectual Property (CHIP) prosecutor and as the First Assistant U.S. Attorney.
In 2019, he received the Anti-Defamation League’s SHIELD award with FBI and Department of Justice partners, and he shared the 2018 International Association of Chiefs of Police/Thomson Reuters Award for Excellence in Criminal Investigation with the FBI and GBI. ....

You get to the senate because there has to be bipartisan agreement on what the process is going forward. the president has done a very successful job hammering to the base that the process has been broken, that the process is rigged, out to get him from the beginning, and what that has done is shored up the republicans in congress. what they re hearing when they go home why are you not defending the president more. when they get back to washington you see what you re seeing, a firmly party line vote and what you re going to end up having is a senate process that ends with acquittal where they will come out and declare victory. i think the reason they have sat out the process in the house is they know that democrats have the votes. they know in the senate that republicans have the votes. that s where they want to play the game. when they play the game and end up winning they re going to claim victory and the president will say he was vindicated all along. it s not a game. people died ....
