Dell shares rise on plans to spin off top-performing VMware unit

April 15 (Reuters) - Shares of Dell rose nearly 8% in premarket on Thursday, a day after the PC maker said it would spin off its majority stake in cloud computing software maker VMware, which would trim down its business and make the firm nimbler.
The spinoff of its 81% stake in VMware, first proposed in a filing last July, would also help Dell lower its long-term debt of $41.62 billion, much of which was taken on during its 2016 acquisition of data management firm EMC.
Wall street analysts saw benefits in the spinoff, but some also raised long-term concerns about company’s core business. ....

PC shipments notch fastest quarterly growth in 20 years - Gartner

(Reuters) - Global shipments of personal computers rose at their fastest pace in two decades in the first quarter as people bought computers to help them work and study remotely during the COVID-19 crisis, according to research firm Gartner Inc.
PC shipments, which include both laptops and desktop computers, grew 32% in the quarter to 69.9 million units, Gartner said.
China’s Lenovo Group Ltd grabbed the lead with a 25.1% market share, followed by HP Inc, Dell Technologies Inc, Apple Inc and Acer Group, according to the report.
“This growth should be viewed in the context of two unique factors: comparisons against a pandemic-constrained market and the current global semiconductor shortage,” said Mikako Kitagawa, research director at Gartner. ....

Lenovo's parent company invests $237 million in Chinese chipmaker Fullhan

(Reuters) - Legend Holdings, the parent of the world’s biggest PC maker Lenovo, said it would buy a 15.9% stake in chipmaker Fullhan Microelectronics for 1.54 billion yuan ($236.9 million) in a push to diversify its portfolio.
Legend’s unit Dongfangqihui bought 12.8 million shares between Sept. 1 and March 17 from privately held Quick Talent Holdings, the company said on Wednesday, with the last round of transaction for a 5.2% stake yet to settle.
Most well-known for its ownership of Lenovo, Legend, for years has sought to diversify its portfolio beyond the computer sector, including finance and car rental industries. ....
