The FINANCIAL - Bat-Sense Tech Generates Images from Sound

The FINANCIAL Scientists have found a way to equip everyday objects like smartphones and laptops with a bat-like sense of their surroundings.  At the heart of the technique is a sophisticated machine-learning algorithm which uses reflected echoes to generate images, similar to the way bats navigate and hunt using echolocation, according to University of Glasgow.
The algorithm measures the time it takes for blips of sound emitted by speakers or radio waves pulsed from small antennas to bounce around inside an indoor space and return to the sensor.
By cleverly analysing the results, the algorithm can deduce the shape, size and layout of a room, as well as pick out in the presence of objects or people. The results are displayed as a video feed which turns the echo data into three-dimensional vision. ....

Scientists have created a tool to equip objects like smartphones and laptops with a bat-like sense of their surroundings.
A machine-learning algorithm developed by experts at the University of Glasgow can measure echoes and sounds to generate images and create the shape, size and layout of the immediate environment.
Researchers say it could help keep buildings intruder-proof without the need for traditional CCTV, track the movements of vulnerable patients in nursing homes, and even track the rise and fall of a patient’s chest to alert health staff to changes in breathing. ....

Electronic devices including smartphones and laptops could soon be used to ‘see’ in the dark using bat-like echolocation, claim researchers in Scotland.

The scientists at Glasgow University used the speakers and microphone from a laptop to generate and receive acoustic waves in the kilohertz range, and also used an antenna to do the same with radio-frequency sounds in the gigahertz range, collecting the data as a single person moved through a room. They simultaneously recorded data about the room using a time-of-flight camera which measures the dimensions of the room and provides a low-resolution image. ....
