good evening, everyone. thanks for joining us here in the newsroom. i m don lemon. we begin with new information about a deadly crash at a nevada air show. crowds have been going to reno, nevada for decades to watch incredible acts of courage in the skies. the national championship air races draw up to 200,000 people every single year. planes have crashed and pilots have died in the past. but until now, nos spectators have been killed. here s what happened. one witness called the sound of the impact unbelievable and you can certainly see why. veteran pilot and hollywood stuntman jimmy leeward was killed. eight people in the crowd also died. photographs taken right before the crash show a piece of the plane appears to be missing. a piece that would have had a major impact on the pilot s ability to maintain control. cnn s dan simon is in reno, nevada tonight and he has more on the pilot and the investigation into the crash. he was an aviation all-star, at least here ....

before that person s head get notice way. we will continue to show that to you just so you get a sense of the speed with which it was traveling and the direction, heading straight down, should have been traveling in a horizontal position as other planes were during this race. crashing into a box seat area in front of the main grandstand. the plane, a p-51 mustang, a world war ii era fighter plane known as the galloping ghost. the pilot, mr. leeward, was competing at the national championship air races and air show at the reno stead airport. witnesses say his plane was about 400 to 500 feet in the air when it nosedived. the regional medical center confirmed it has received a total of 21 patients so far. joining me now is fred schultz, he witnessed the crash, a pilot himself. fred, what did you see? well, what i seen, we looked up above the grandstands and he was in trouble and coming straight down. i think he was trying to do whatever he could right up to the end. i ....

eyewitness. this is bes bessi murphy, a nur far west virginia. what did you see? i was further away. i was in the pits area. at the point i did not see the actual impact. what i had heard was all call for medical personnel as they were asking for people to leave. so i responded, and when i got on the scene, they were quickly within just a couple of minutes from my time to get to the area, they already had the people triaged, had the ambulances available, had the situation pretty much under control. they still had people looking for families and friends, people were still in shock, so they were still trying to get people out of the area but as far as emergency responders, they had the situation pretty well under control. that s why we wanted to talk to you because you re a nurse back home in west virginia. you came here on vacation to see the races. and you chipped in to help, essentially. exactly. they had asked for all medical personnel. there were others that re ....

that plane. cnn s dann simon it in reno, nevada for us. dan, the ntsb asked about those photos at a news conference today. the death toll is now up to nine from three. what did investigators have o to say? reporter: no question, don, investigators will be looking at the tail of that aircraft. we have seen those pictures and it s pretty certain that at least at one point during the flight what s called the elevator lift tab dislodged from the plane. aviation experts have told me it would be very difficult to control the plane if, in fact, that occurred. crews here have been at the scene today going through the wreckage. they actually went over the lapse if you will to see where exactly that plane went and they did find something on the ground. i want you to listen now to the national transportation board investigator. we re aware of that. in fact, a component has been recovered in the area where that was observed. but i think it s critical at this point to know that ....
