Swastikas scribbled on the Bagg Street Shul's front entrance has ignited a call for more government action against antisemitic hate crimes, but the synagogue's director says he doesn't want Montreal's welcoming atmosphere marred the once incident.
“While the congregation is small, the synagogue evokes Jewish history in Montreal and the attack on it is causing dismay in the community,” a former city councilor wrote in a letter to the city’s mayor.
Members of the Bagg Street Shul in Plateau Mont Royal were shocked to find the legendary synagogue had been defaced with swastikas and anti-Semitic graffiti during the weekend.
