Local and state leaders mostly praised legislation passed by the state Senate on Monday that would allow for tax breaks for Connecticut data centers. H.B. 6514, An Act Concerning Incentives for Qualified Data Centers to Locate in the State, is important to eastern Connecticut, a potential landing spot for data centers. During a public hearing last week, Randy Collins from the Connecticut Conference of Municipalities said he’s had conversations with Groton, Montville and Norwich about considering such facilities in Connecticut. Sen. Cathy Osten, D-Sprague, said an interested developer has talked to Norwich, Groton, Montville and Ledyard officials. She said the eastern Connecticut delegation and several others met with state Department of Economic and Community Development Commissioner David Lehman to ensure the towns weren’t left out of a deal. ....
Published February 23. 2021 7:41PM Kelan Lyons, The Connecticut Mirror Three weeks into the Department of Correction’s vaccinations of the incarcerated population, 837 inmates less than 10% of the 9,034 people in prisons and jails as of Feb. 22 have received the first dose of the COVID-19 vaccine. The department received another 500 doses Tuesday morning. Department Director of External Affairs Karen Martucci said the DOC has used all of the shots it has received and is seeking more. “We roll them out as they come in,” she said. The DOC began vaccinating the 27 incarcerated individuals age 75 or older in early February and then began vaccinating people between the ages of 65 and 74. ....

Published February 23. 2021 9:14PM HARTFORD (AP) Connecticut Republicans have chosen Sue Hatfield, a state prosecutor and vice chair of the state GOP, to finish the remainder of J.R. Romano s term as chairman, who had resigned. Members of the Connecticut Republican State Central Committee on Monday night elected Hatfield following a four-way race. She will hold the position until June, when Romano s term was scheduled to expire. “I look forward to bringing much-needed stability, and will work hard to unify our party, at this critical time,” Hatfield said in a written statement. “We are at an important crossroads.” Romano informed state Republicans on Jan. 12 that he was ending his third two-year term six months early. He did not give specific reasons for his resignation during an interview, saying only, “It’s time for someone new. It’s time for a new voice.” ....

The arguments were similar to previous years, when opponents to the legislation packed the halls of the state Capitol complex in Hartford and waited hours to testify in person, many with their children in tow. Parents concerned about the safety of vaccines argued that stripping the exemption would infringe on their religious and parental rights, as well as their child s right to a public education. ....
