A Ph.D. in Swing
A Ph.D. in Swing John Job/Special to The Oak Ridger The 1970s’ boogie band Little Feat sang of a “doctor of the heart” who had “two degrees in be-bop, a Ph.D. in swing/He’s the master of rhythm, he’s a rock-n-roll king.” They said, “if you want to feel real nice, just ask the rock-n-roll doctor’s advice.” That doctor, a new friend of mine (well, he’s a friend now), made a north-to-south cut 13 inches long down the center of my chest two weeks ago (Dec. 4). Then he used a Dremel to saw my sternum down the middle and spread my ribs apart.
