Inextricably tied to the functions of the intelligence and defense agencies. were you surprised at all given your reporting thus far? not at all. i ve written a great deal about all that, the problems with all this contracting. it is really amazing. these are companies, some big companies like saic and booz allen and thousands of little companies nobody s ever heard of, ma, pa, beltway bandit type companies. they all are outsourced by nsa to do things like eavesdropping. these are people in little companies nobody s heard of with earphones on their head eavesdropping on communications. you can see ads in newspapers, in sort of technical papers, advertising for people with clearances that are able to do this work. the signals intelligence work. eavesdropping communications and so forth. this is a massive operation within the industrial intelligence industrial complex. ....

And the broad different bureaucracies that comprise the intelligence community is many of them have been privatized. contracting in the intelligence world is very lucrative. and so you ve got large operations, dan nan priest did a beautiful job in the washington post last year documenting much of the growth of the intelligence industrial complex. and so it s not surprising at all that someone like ed yard snowden would be part of that process. i have known air force personnel working in the national geospace needle agency in their air force uniform and retired and got the same job as a private contractor working for one of many of the various defense contractors. this is not unusual. steve, just after just three months, this individual had that kind of comprehensive access? well, that is remarkable. you know, someone needs to look at this. when we see john kerry unable to get people vetted for jobs in the department of state. right. and you look at somebody who moves at lightni ....

Dangerous. mers virus is a virus that affects the lungs as well. it can cause pneumonia, high fevers. it s concerning because it s deadly. so far there have been reports of 50 people infected with it. over 30 people have died already. just looking at the likelihood of fatality once you ve infected it, it s very high. it s very dangerous. but if we look at the larger picture, where about 4 million people have traveled to saudi arabia recently for pilgrimages. if only 50 people have actually been infected with all this travel, then the risk of contracting it is relatively low. it spreads pretty slowly. what makes it so hard to stop the virus? viruses in general are different than bacteria so they don t have their own cells. what they to is join with human cells and they infect the human. so in terms of drugs, normally what you do is you get a drug thatteriabacteria, kill bacteria and your human cell is all right. ....

Dramatically. i tried to coin the term the golden age of deficit reduction. guilded age. never before have we had so much deficit reduction. it s coming in at 640. no one contemplated that magnitude. let s not forget the poor, giant corporations. federal government contracting is a major piece of business in this country, so you ve had cisco systems come out and say our sales aren t going to be so great because of the sequester. ibm, ge, booze allen, these are people who in large measure subsist on defense department contracts. they re not getting them and to me it s sort of amazing. we re not surprised that the political system is not responsive to the poor. so that s part of what was we are surprised that it s not responsive to the rich. this is what is interesting about the wall street journal piece this morning. part of it s claim is that you end up with these folks who ....
