OTTAWA, ON, May 4, 2021 /CNW/ - Today, the Minister of Natural Resources, the Honourable Seamus O Regan Jr., announced that the Government of Canada has approved the NOVA Gas Transmission Ltd. (NGTL) 2023 North Corridor System Expansion Project with 37 conditions. This decision was based on facts, science, Indigenous knowledge, the public interest, and careful consideration of the concerns of potentially impacted Indigenous communities.
Reconciliation with Indigenous Peoples is a top priority for the Government of Canada. Over the past eleven months, Natural Resources Canada undertook extensive Crown consultations as part of fulfilling our duty to consult and accommodate and mitigate potential impacts on the rights and interests of Indigenous communities. These consultations followed a thorough review of the project by the Commission of the Canada Energy Regulator (CER). ....

Net Zero: Feds to take over Highway 413 environmental assessment

The federal government will take over the environmental assessment (EA) of the proposed Highway 413 project in Ontario, Environment and Climate Change Minister Jonathan Wilkinson announced Monday, in response to the pleas of several environmental groups to do so. Highway 413, also known as the GTA West corridor, would extend 59 km west of Toronto.
“The Impact Assessment Agency of Canada and other federal departments have identified clear areas of federal concern related to this project,” Wilkinson said in a statement. “My decision is based on their finding that this project may cause adverse direct or incidental effects on federally listed species at risk, and the uncertainty that officials have brought to my attention … whether those effects can be mitigated through project design or existing mechanisms.” ....
