WHAT it means to leave a meeting virtually was debated by the borough council s planning committee after one of its members declared an interest in an application. Coun Peter Watts said he had interest in an extension in St Helen’s View in Old Town. When meetings were held at the Civic Offices, Coun Watts would have left the chamber and been called back when the item was concluded. Because he had difficulty logging in to the virtual meeting - and because members must by law, be present throughout an item to vote on it - Coun Watts said he would mute his microphone and turn his camera off. When that was deemed not sufficient, he suggested he stayed logged in but left the room to return when given a call or text. ....
A Swindon parish council is set to spend around £1m refurbishing its play areas over five years. In 2017 South Swindon Parish Council took over the running of 23 play parks and so far it has refurbished 11 at a total cost of £470,000. It expects to spend a similar amount revamping the remaining sites. Chairman Chris Watts believes the money being but into these areas is necessary. “There had been little investment in play areas in the previous 10 years, mainly due to the cuts that had been placed on Swindon Borough Council. “Essentially the council had lost £50m worth of government grant money per year and if they look at where they can make cuts, libraries and playgrounds are the first in line. ....
