Feds give $2M for Indigenous program fighting racism in healthcare

The federal government is allocating $2 million to two Indigenous organizations in Quebec to help them in their fight against systemic racism faced by First Nation communities in the provincial health system, Indigenous Services Minister Marc Miller announced Wednesday.
The money will go to the Council of the Atikamekw Nation and the Atikamekw Council of Manawan to help them with their advocacy for the implementation of Joyce’s Principle, named after Joyce Echaquan.
The Atikamekw mother of seven died in a Quebec hospital last September after she filmed herself from her hospital bed pleading for help and getting derogatory remarks from hospital staff. ....

The Quebec Nurses Association has published a statement, calling on Quebec and Canada to adopt Joyce s Principle. The letter is below.
A year before the death of Joyce Echaquan, which occurred on Sept. 28, 2020, the Viens Commission declared that the Indigenous peoples of Quebec were victims of systemic discrimination:
“Whether it is on the basis of physical health, mental health, justice, life expectancy, parenthood, housing or income, the difficulties experienced by the Indigenous peoples of Quebec clearly demonstrate the failure of the public system to meet their needs. For this, we are collectively responsible. - Jacques Viens (2019), commissioner of the inquiry on the relations between Indigenous peoples and certain public services in Quebec ....

The Quebec Government has awards funding worth CAD5.943 million ($4.55 million) to a non-profit organisation Bioénergie La Tuque (BELT) under a program called Technoclimat from Transition Énergétique Québec (TEQ) for a project to develop and demonstrate the potential of producing advanced biofuels from locally-sourced forestry waste in La Tuque, Quebec, Canada. The funding will be used to continue project development and plant design, which are key enablers for making further decisions regarding the potential of building a renewable fuels plant in the area. 
 
BELT, the Council of the Atikamekw Nation (CNA), and Neste, the world’s leading renewable diesel and sustainable aviation fuel provider, have been collaborating on the project since 2017.
