Border staff pulled from Larne and Belfast ports over safety threats
Border staff have been pulled from checkpoints in Larne and Belfast following “serious concerns” for safety.
Mid and East Antrim Borough Council last night said “no option but to withdraw them” immediately from their duties at Larne Port with the Department of Agriculture, Environment and Rural Affairs (DAERA) following suit for staff at both Larne and Belfast ports.
Sinister graffiti warning “all border post staff are targets” appeared in Larne just a few days ago.
The council said the situation had “caused extreme distress and worry” to staff and added it would carry out a risk assessment alongside the Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI), Food Standards Agency and DAERA. ....

Council plays role in Union Connectivity Review


Mid and East Antrim Borough Council has welcomed the opportunity to contribute to a call for evidence for the Prime Minister’s Union Connectivity Review.
The purpose of this review is to examine how best to improve road, rail, air and sea links between all four UK regions and to bring forward funding to accelerate infrastructure projects.
Mayor of Mid and East Antrim, Councillor Peter Johnston said: “We believe that the links between the regions of the United Kingdom are of the utmost economic, social and cultural importance. As a Council we have placed the promotion of ‘Sustainable Jobs and Tourism’ at the heart of our Corporate Plan for 2019-2023 and we recognise that good connectivity with the rest of the UK will be key in delivering our aspirations for the Borough.” ....

The resilience and determination of the Mid and East Antrim business community has been hailed by the Mayor, Councillor Peter Johnston.

The Mayor, Councillor Peter Johnston, extending season s greetings to Michael and Phyllis Wady at Sk8 in Carrickfergus.
The first citizen was commenting after visiting premises in Carrickfergus and Larne - and ahead of the Executive’s announcement of a new six-week lockdown from Boxing Day which includes non-essential shops closing - to wish traders a happy Christmas.
Despite having been harshly impacted by the Covid-19 emergency, businesses within the borough have shown great strength of spirit and agility to the ever-changing situation throughout 2020, the Mayor continued. ....

Councillors send strong message that domestic violence is never acceptable


Elected Members on Mid and East Antrim Borough Council have sent a powerful message to our communities and staff that violence against women is never acceptable.
Members once again reiterated their commitment to raising awareness around domestic violence and abuse by signing the White Ribbon Charter.
In doing so, Council has given its support to the campaign undertaken in Northern Ireland by Women’s Aid in Antrim, Ballymena, Carrickfergus, Larne and Newtownabbey (ABCLN), which encourages groups and individuals to make a personal pledge never to commit, condone or remain silent about violence against women.
Elected Members also signed the Workplace Charter on Domestic Violence, an accreditation scheme to enable organisations, businesses, churches and communities to be recognised for their support to anyone affected by domestic violence or abuse. ....
