Bethel City Council kills anti-marijuana and anti-alcohol legislation

During their April 12 meeting, the Bethel City Council killed three proposed pieces of alcohol and marijuana-targeted legislation. It also pushed back the final vote on a transfer of land to ONC and granted funds to the most recent batch of Community Action Grant awardees.

A Bethel city council member has proposed a ban on pot shops

During their April 12 meeting, the Bethel City Council will also consider two other pieces of legislation that target alcohol and marijuana in Bethel. It will also take up a proposed land transfer agreement with the Orutsararmiut Native Council.

Bethel City Council to once again consider pandemic measures during a special meeting on Dec. 20

The mayor called the meeting after two of the measures failed to get extended when a single council member voted against them during their last regular meeting on Dec. 14. The other two measures were tabled. The measures need a supermajority to pass. If just two out of the seven council members vote against them, they'll be overturned.

Bethel city council overturns half of the city's COVID-19 emergency mandates

These mandates did not pass because a supermajority of six out of seven council members is required to pass emergency mandates. One council member, Perry Barr, who has always voted to pass these mandates was not in attendance. Councilmember Mary “Beth” Hessler voted against the mandates.
