Companies sued over roadside signs so big they allegedly caused accident

PITTSBURGH - A Gibsonia couple sued two businesses they accuse of causing a traffic collision by placing obstructive advertisements at an intersection, according to documents recently filed in the Allegheny County Court of Common Pleas. 
According to the lawsuit, plaintiff Gregory F. Reed was riding his bicycle along the southbound lane of Mars Evans City Road in Callery on June 13, 2020. He approached and entered the intersection at Kline Avenue/Marburger Road.
At the same time, someone operating a vehicle stopped at the intersection and looked for traffic before continuing. The suit says that, because of large advertising signs from defendants Ryan Homes and Milano Pizza, the driver could not see the cyclist entering the intersection.  ....

Landlord rights group says Pittsburgh has violated city and state laws through eviction regulation ordinance

PITTSBURGH – A landlord advocacy group has brought suit against the City of Pittsburgh and the Pittsburgh City Council, claiming that the City has violated its Home Rule Charter and the state constitution, in its implementation of a temporary eviction measure during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Landlord Service Bureau, Inc. of North Huntingdon filed suit in the Allegheny County Court of Common Pleas on March 4 versus the City and its Council.
“The plaintiff is Pennsylvania landlord service organization, among other services, that provides advocacy to protect the interest and rights of landlord throughout Western Pennsylvania and in this case specifically, landlords in the City of Pittsburgh. Plaintiffs bring the within action to challenge the validity of the recent enactment of the New Chapter 782 Temporary Eviction Regulation for Disease Prevention and Control Due to COVID-19, and request this Court to stri ....

DirecTV dish caused house fire, lawsuit claims


PITTSBURGH - A Pittsburgh woman sued the Duquesne Light Company and DirecTV, blaming them for her house fire in March 2019.
The suit comes two years after a fire broke out at the home of plaintiff Anne Scarpaci that was determined by the City of Pittsburgh Fire Investigation Unit to have originated from the DirecTV satellite dish mounted on the plaintiff s roof.
The dish was allegedly improperly touching an energized electrical line, owned by Duquesne, which provided electrical service to Scarpaci s home. 
Both defendants are sued for negligence in failing to notice and maintain a hazardous situation. DirecTV also faces one count of breach of contract. ....

Woman alleges she suffered respiratory disease after inhaling fumes from nearby chemical fire

PITTSBURGH – A Beaver County woman alleges she has suffered severe respiratory ailments after inhaling fumes from a chemical fire which took place about a half-mile from her residence.
Carol A. Brutout of Rochester filed suit in the Allegheny County Court of Common Pleas on March 4 versus Michael Baker International, Inc. (formerly known as “Michael Baker Jr., Inc.”) of Pittsburgh, One Brewery Place, Inc. of Rochester, Harold B. Davidson (also known as “Brad Davidson”) and Beaver Alkali Products of Ellwood City, and James R. Davidson (also known as “Randy Davidson”), of Dover, Fla.
The suit says that the owner/operator defendants (all of the defendants minus Michael Baker International, Inc.) managed a property at 25 New York Avenue in Rochester. ....

$300K chimney sweep fire damages update: Settlement reached in case

PITTSBURGH – Litigation between an insurance company representing a Wexford man and the owner of a chimney sweep business, whose allegedly subpar work caused a fire resulting in almost $300,000 in damages, has been settled.
State Farm Fire and Casualty Company (as subrogee of Mark Hessling) of Bloomington, Ill. first filed suit in the Allegheny County Court of Common Pleas on Nov. 13 versus Almir Cemer (individually and doing business as “Al’s Chimney Sweep”), of Coraopolis.
The suit first explained that Hessling owns property on Timberglen Drive West in Wexford and contracted with Cemer for service to the chimney at that residence. ....
