With the number of COVID-19 cases on the rise daily, there is a shortage of beds in Intensive Care Units (ICUs) for the COVID-19 patients in hospitals islandwide.
Primary Health Care, Epidemics and COVID-19 Disease Control Minister Sudarshani Fernandopulle told Daily Mirror that the available capacity in ICU was almost full.
Steps are being taken to increase the capacity in ICUs and High Dependency Units in order to address the issue,” she said.
She also said a new strain had been apparently identified and that’s why the ICU admissions had gone up.

Former Minister Rishad Bathiudeen being taken to prison when he was arrested in October last year
All Ceylon Makkal Congress (ACMC) leader and ex-Cabinet Minister Rishad Bathiudeen is a prominent Sri Lankan politician, who is very often in the news for the wrong reasons. 
The 48-year-old Bathiudeen hailing from Dharapuram in the Mannar District is an engineer by training. Known widely as Rishad, he was first elected to Parliament from the Northern Vanni electoral district in December 2001. He has been consistently elected as Vanni MP since then in 2004, 2010,2015 and 2020. Rishad has also served continuously from January 2007 to November 2019 as Cabinet Minister in the governments of Mahinda Rajapaksa and Maithripala Sirisena. Currently his party the ACMC has 4 MP’s and 169 Local Authority Members.

LankaWeb – Perfume and cosmetic items of Rs. 17.2 Bn imported within five years: Cabraal

It was revealed in Parliament that Rs. 17.2 billion has been spent to import perfume and cosmetic items within five years from 2015 to 2019.
It was also revealed that the amount of perfume and cosmetic items imported to the country during the said period was 13.8 million kgs.
These figures came to light when Ajith Nivard Cabraal responded to a question raised by Government MP Mohammed Muzammil.
MP Muzammil said the imported perfume and cosmetic items are of low quality and requested the Minister to look into the matter.
Minister Cabraal assured to implement a joint mechanism together with the Health Ministry to resolve this issue. 

LankaWeb – Sri Lanka and China sign US$ 1.5 billion currency swap deal

The Central Bank of Sri Lanka (CBSL) and the People’s Bank of China (PBoC) have entered into a bilateral currency swap agreement with a view to promoting bilateral trade and direct investment for economic development of the two countries, and to be used for other purposes agreed upon by both parties, CBSL said.
The People’s Republic of China remains Sri Lanka’s largest source of imports. In 2020, imports from China amounted to US$ 3.6 billion (22.3% of Sri Lanka’s imports). 
This swap agreement has been approved by the Cabinet of Ministers with the recommendation of the Monetary Board of CBSL. Governors of the two Central Banks, Deshamanya Professor W D Lakshman of CBSL and Dr. Yi Gang, Governor of PBOC, are the signatories to the agreement.

LankaWeb – Basic heavy vehicle driving licencee will not be allowed to drive passenger buses: Dilum

Despite holding a heavy vehicle driving licence from ordinary driving schools, the Transport Ministry had decided not to allow those drivers to drive passenger transport vehicles, Transport State Minister Dilum Amunugama said.
While addressing an event in Kalutara today, the State Minister said the decision was taken to introduce a new driver’s licence to drove passenger buses.
There is an alarming increase in accidents involving buses owing to poor knowledge and learning to drive buses, he said.
Under the current situation, those who had obtained heavy vehicle driving licences from any driving school, are permitted to drive   passengers buses.

Sri Lanka today claimed that allegations raised against the country at the UN Human Rights Council (UNHRC) in Geneva are politically biased
Foreign Minister Dinesh Gunawardena said that the allegations raised by several countries including the UK, Canada and Germany, of human rights abuses in Sri Lank, is an action taken for political purposes, by concealing the truth.
A vote is scheduled to be held on 22 March 2021 on the allegations made by several countries against Sri Lanka, at the 46th session of the UN Human Rights Council (UNHRC) in Geneva. Responding to a question raised by journalists at the Foreign Ministry in this regard today, the Minister pointed out that it is not the responsibility of an internationally recognized Human Rights Council to accuse or take a vote on the internal affairs of our country.

Public Security Minister Sarath Weerasekera said, former Western Province Governor Azath Salley was arrested by CID as is alleged to have had links to the Easter Sunday suicide attack.
Speaking to media after the Kolonnawa Regional Development meeting, he alleged that according to initial investigation it was revealed that Salley had overt or covert link to  vandalizing of the Buddha statues in Mawanella and to the attack.
He said the CID conducting further investigation on Azath Salley under detection order.
“Also, Salley made a statement recently over Shari’a law and that he does not want to honour the law of the land. Such statement would lead to religious extremism,” he said.

Prominent Russian business tycoon Andrey Melnichenko visited Port City Colombo today. 
He was accompanied by Sri Lankan-born British Politician and former EU Parliamentarian Niranjan Deva Aditya, a statement said.
The statement said  Melnichenko is a self-made billionaire with major investments in Switzerland based fertilizer giant EuroChem Group and Russia based coal energy company SUEK.
He was warmly welcomed by Port City Colombo Assistant Managing 
Directors Yue Yeqing and Thulci Aluwihare together with Director Sales and Marketing Yamuna Jayaratne.
The delegation was briefed on Port City Colombo project, its construction progress and future developments by Radhika Ellepola, Country Manager Sales and Investor Relations.

Intending to build public opinion against the foreign private enterprises taking over lands on a large scale and causing irreversible impact on the environment, a forum named ‘Our Land is Not For Sale’ was formed recently with the participation of environmental activists and other civil groups movements in collaboration with the Centre for Society and Religion (CSR).  
Today we see a tendency that the State mechanism has created room for selling lands and resources to large scale private enterprises. This has not only posed a threat to the forest cover but also to the coastal resources. Most ongoing development strategies seemed to be based on this.

Recommendations made by the Presidential Commission, which probed the Easter Sunday attacks should be implemented soon while more investigations should be carried out to determine as to who organised and facilitated the attacks, Archbishop of Colombo Cardinal Malcolm Ranjith said today.
Cardinal Ranjith who was speaking to the media after participating in the Black Sunday protest at St. Sebastian’s Church Katuwapitiya said the government should immediately implement the recommendations made by the Presidential commission.
The Commission had recommended action against certain people and this action should be taken without delay,” Cardinal Ranjith said.

Justice Minister Ali Sabry said a proposal has been made to the Cabinet to impose laws to ban wearing of the burqa in public places considering the security of the country.
He told a news conference that a Cabinet Paper has also been submitted to amend Muslim laws by November.
We have submitted a cabinet paper to amend Muslim laws by November. We have proposed to amend matters widely discussed in society such as minimum marriageable age as 18, allowing Muslim woman to sign when getting married and to ensure equal rights to women as men,” he said and added that in addition, we have proposed that burqa should not be worn in public places. This is not targeting a specific community, but considering the security of the country,” he said.
