Southwest did hire experts to come in and look at the cracking situation. but the experts in boeing said that some cracking was okay. in some cases up to six inches. we should note that this isn t the first time this has happened. back in 2009, a southwest plane was forced to make an emergency landing for the very same thing. that was four months after the airline was fined $7.5 million by the faa for failing to perform mandatory inspections for fuselage cracks on nearly 60,000 flights. it is official, folks. here is the message president obama tweeted this morning. it announced he is launching a campaign for a second term. he also drives people to his official campaign website in a video entitled it begins with us. noticeably absent were the familiar slogans which called for change in 2008. so let s talk more about this with dana lowe, cnn contributor ....

In which a five foot hole was torn in a plane s roof shortly after takeoff. in a separate event last night, a southwest plane headed for oakland was forced to divert, made an unscheduled landing in los angeles after an electrical burning odor. nbc s tom costello is live in the new rooms and has been following all of this. i want to clarify. i ve seen two numbers up there. i thought i had read in one of your earlier reports it was 100 additional flights canceled. what is the accurate number? in last hour they said it was 70. they have now come down from 100. they had to cancel 70 flights today. over the weekend they cancelled about 3 00 on saturday, several hundred on sunday. for most part, they will be through this, they hope, by midday tomorrow. of the 79 planes they took out of service to inspect for any signs of cracking, 57 have already been returned to service. they continue to do the inspections. they did find cracks on three planes. ....

We know there were 40,000 cycles on this southwest 737 that made the emergency landing. so it s entirely possible that will become a focus for investigators checking for cracking on planes that had high cycles on them. of course, as you know there were no injuries on this flight and everybody was then put onto another plane and they made it to sacramento. the overwhelming sense seems to be on travelers who have been inconvenienced by this, better safe than sorry. better to check the planes and make sure there isn t any cracking and then move on to your destination, but it s entirely possible that boeing may issue what s called a service bulletin urging airlines around the world to check for cracks and do so immediately and if boeing says that, look for the government to order those inspections at least here in the united states. for the most part only southwest flies the 737 300. toms, back to you. tom, thank you. ....

Flights on saturday, several hundred on sunday, and the focus has been on the 737 300s that might have cracking. any know that they saw significant cracking on that plane that made the emergency landing on friday in yuma. the question is whether other planes might have similar types of issues underneath what s called a lap joint, that is a joint when the different plates of metal on top of the plane sit on top of each other. underneath one of the plates they found the significant amount of cracking. pre-existing cracking prior to the hole being ripped open on friday night. so southwest has now inspected and released 57 planes out of 79. 57 have now gone back into service, given a clean bill of health. they say three planes were found to have small cracks on the fuselage, so they will have to fix those. but then the question becomes might there be other planes beyond these that were designed in the same way or that had similar numbers of cycles, that is a takeoff and a landing. ....
