MSNBC Andrea Mitchell Reports October 13, 2021 16:45:00

They re trying to succeed where they previously failed. that s how democracies come to an end. it s not office by violence, it s the cloak of legality, but using democracy to attack itself. the personal threats, the death threats, the way your family was acted, what does it say about public service. we have seen this happen to others in this highly polarized society, what are you going through? this was hard to write about. i remember be e.g. in the kitchen with my wife and tears in her eyes about the threats we were getting and the fact that so many millions of people hated her husband. it was one of those things where it just picked up overtime. i wasn t even aware of it happening, but it comes crashing in on you. my circumstance is not, sadly, atypical. ....

To at least touch base. what is your sense of the consensus of your party on this? i was just up on the senate floor a few minutes ago, and that s why i know that we re going to be convening a senate democratic caucus shortly so we can discuss this with the full caucus. again, people want to understand the fine print. you know, right now democrats have been very clear that we will provide the 51 votes, the majority votes necessary to prevent the economy from crashing. we will take the action to help pay for bills that republicans ran up, including on their reckless tax giveaway a number of years ago. obviously it would be better for the country if we could do this on a more sustained basis, for a much longer period of time, which is typically what we do. what mcconnell is proposing is to bring the new debt ceiling ....

Government entirely, and saying the government can never be a part of a solution, or the military could never be part of doing anything good or teachers could never go to public school and do anything good for our next generation. that gets quite extreme which is why we re talking about extremism. you have crunched many numbers in many polls because you re a strategist among other things, take a look at a really dramatic crashing among republicans of any trusting government whatsoever, in the reagan 80s, a majority of republicans said they broadly trust the government, and you see it crashing all the way down to being a really minority vanishing view today that any republicans trust the government to do much of anything. how do you address that? yeah, well, i mean, i think that s the perfect collapse of any idea of a party of ideas because if you are a member of a party and your party is in power, as republicans just were, and you don t trust government, what you re really saying is ....

Pettypiece. good morning, shannon. thanks so much for being here. let s talk about what we heard from president biden. do you think mitch mcconnell will think twice about whether he wants republicans blamed for a tanking economy and crashing 401(k)s? i m not going to venture to guess what mitch mcconnell thinks about anything. smart guess. there s a lot of political gamesmanship going on on both sides. you could see the president yesterday trying to get out ahead of this on the messaging and shift that blame to republicans, bringing up the point that it is spending under previous administrations including significant spending under the trump administration that has contributed to the debt and the need to raise the debt ceiling. saw him calling out mcconnell by name specifically. you saw him calling out republicans in general, and you see a bit of a preview of what the white house plans and intends to do over the coming days as this issue progresses. ....
