A 7-year-old boy who drowned off the coast of Te Awa, Napier, was playing a game against crashing waves with his twin brother before he was washed away.
Te Ao Marama Te Pou, known as Marama, was playing in the shallows with brother Whetu and a friend when waves swept him away on February 21, 2020. ....

The lawyer for a Bay of Plenty cop convicted after crashing a police car while drink driving on duty says the officer apologises to the public and his colleagues.
Andrew Rush, 38, admitted two driving offences in the Whakatāne District Court yesterday following the incident in Edgecumbe earlier this month.
He pleaded guilty to one count each of careless driving and driving with excess breath alcohol.
The charges follow a single-vehicle crash involving a police vehicle at the corner of Otakiri Rd and Main St, Edgecumbe, at 8.30 pm on April 6 this year. ....

When the tsunami came that winter morning in 1868,
many Chatham Islanders were asleep.
Accompanied by a rising roar, three waves more than 6m high suddenly surged 6km inland across parts of the northern and eastern coasts of the main island during a 15-minute period from 1am on August 15. ....

Car hits power pole, driver leaves scene in Rotorua

A driver left the scene after crashing their car into a power pole in Rotorua.
A police spokeswoman said they were notified of the incident, at the intersection of Clayton Rd and Spencer St, at 10.35pm.
It looks like the driver left the scene on foot following the crash but was located a short distance away, she said.
There were no injuries reported.
