Romeo and Juliet: A Multi-Platform Digital Theatre production

Romeo and Juliet: A Multi-Platform Digital Theatre production

Although every cloud has a silver lining, the “opportunities” provided by the pandemic to deliver something new have largely been unsuccessful and left audiences cold and aching for “proper” theatre. Yet with her tight new digital production of
Romeo and Juliet for Creation Theatre in partnership with Watford Palace Theatre, Natasha Rickman has achieved what I was beginning to think was impossible – an experience that is genuinely theatrical and yet takes full advantage of online presentation. If you have ever wished it was possible to watch – closely – everyone on stage at the same time, you will be delighted by the way Rickman conjures her characters and the settings and incidents of the play – at times hinting that the work of Ingmar Bergman and Nicolas Roeg has been an influence, but creating something unique and really very special.

NWN first to recognise importance of Zoom theatre

AT least three of those listed in the prestigious Stage 100 – normally recognising the most powerful people in theatre in a year and this time about theatre in the pandemic – have links to Newbury.
First, the amazing Creation Theatre and Lucy Askew, Big Telly and Zoe Seaton are listed on the Putting on Shows section. I’m told N2 and our theatre reviewer Jon Lewis have been a significant factor in this, because the NWN’s reviews are part of the reason The Stage says the shows were ‘well-received’. Our archive of reviews is the only place in the world to see all Creation and Big Telly shows on Zoom reviewed. As Jon says: “It's like we’ve backed the winner of the Grand National. but also clean the jockey’s boots or something.”

Art and design online – how to teach creative subjects remotely

Art and design online – how to teach creative subjects remotely
We might feel we know our way around a Zoom call, but when it comes to visual media, we’ve yet to explore the creative possibilities that technology offers...
I’m a regular user of tech, though it’s mostly standard fare. For me, COVID-19 led to tweaks, rather than leaps in my practice.
At Ludlow Sixth Form College, where I’m head of visual arts, media and film, we had to embrace the various image editing programs used by students, and the loss of formal work experience was replaced by Zoom tutorials – all led by academics, past students and creative employers. We even made a link with Aardman Animations, where students formed a focus group panel and reviewed new animations.

Brian Blessed in A Christmas Carol
One has to find the positives wherever they arise, but even more so than usual in 2020: there were about 90 attendees to the Zoom meeting I attended, which served as the platform on which this online production of
A Christmas Carol took place. It’s a larger group than could otherwise be accommodated at Jermyn Street Theatre in person – not having taken social distancing measures into account.
It may be online, but aside from the occasional reference to contemporary events, in which Scrooge’s nephew Fred (Lucy Pearson) and his folks must observe the rule of six, thus preventing a gathering of twenty or more as per their custom on Christmas Day, this is very much
