They work fast. well, before all of that, the fire is so intense, the smoke so thick, and colorado crews cannot tell yet just how bad the damage actually is. the picture does say it all. thousands of residents spending another night not knowing if they even have a home to go back to. look at that home up in flames. abc s rebecca stephens reports on worsening conditions from colorado springs. it s happened. it s coming over the hill. reporter: the massive waldo canyon fire has now engulfed more than 24 square miles. it s starting hundreds of fires in front of itself as it goes. reporter: and it is spreading fast, as fast as 14 miles an hour at times. 32,000 people have already been evacuated. i have never seen anything so scary. reporter: it is bearing down on colorado s second largest city, colorado springs, with the u.s. air force academy right in its path. 700 cadets have already been evacuated. ten acres at the academy s sprawling campus have burned. but so far there ....

good morning. we begin with lingering misery caused by hurricane irene. you re looking at live pictures now from patterson, new jersey, where crews are actually going door-to-door rescuing people from their homes. that water, by the way, coming from the passaic river is supposed to crest today at its highest level since 1903. a pretty eye-catching image of how massive the storm was. this is coming to us from nasa. it s an animated satellite of irene as it s churning up the eastern seaboard like a buzz saw. at last check, 5 million people are still without power. throughout the morning, the death toll has been jumping as well. 38 people are now confirmed dead in 11 states and it could get even higher. three navy ships off the coast of new york to help with search and rescue missions and reps from the obama administration are going to fan out across three of the hardest hit states, virginia, north carolina, and vermont. let s go ahead and start there where floodwaters hav ....

An hour ago that the u.s. coast guard confirms teams have actually started lighting patches of that oil spill on fire to keep the oil from reaching shore. this all started when a drilling platform exploded and then sank in the gulf last week, leaving an open well spewing oil deep below the water s surface. at last check, the enormous oil slick that well created was just 16 miles from venice, louisiana. if crews cannot stop it from reaching the coast line, the consequences could be disastrous for people who depend on the area to make their living and for the hundreds of species of animals that call the coast home. so now with all other plans failing, teams are setting fire to sections of that 100-mile long oil slick. the process is time consuming. first, work boats set off a fire resistant boom that s about 500 feet long. then they drag it across the water to collect a few thousand gallons of the thickest oil on the surface. next, they toe that oil to a more remote area away from the ....
