t.j. winick joins us with details. >> reporter: good morning, peggj and daniel. a new era in child safety began on tuesday with new rules from washington regarding infant cribs. parents can now rest easier while their newborns are sleeping thanks to strict new federal crib standards now in effect. >> we have the strongest crib safety rules in the world today. >> reporter: most significantly, drop-side cribs, models that have a side rail that can be raised and lowered, are no longer allowed to be manufactured or sold. >> the baby can get wedged between the mattress and this side. because it can detach and come loose and that's been the problem with the drop-sides. >> reporter: robert and susan lost their 6-month-old son bobby when he suffocated in a drop-side. >> after research we found that a lot of these cribs had caused injuries and deaths. >> reporter: in fact, at least 32 babies have been killed in drop-side cribs in the past decade. and in just the past five years, 7 million of the cribs have been recalled. >> now cribs need to be tested before they go to the market. rather than relying on recalls. >> reporter: besides stopping the manufacture and sale of
