Former Barrow medical building in Abbey Road being converted into housing

A need for more accommodation for people with special needs and mental health disorders looks set to be eased by a former medical building's transformation.
The former Stafford House NHS building in Barrow’s Abbey Road is due to become independent housing for people with special needs and mental health disorders.
The building is being converted into apartments by Safe As Houses, which bids to ‘help alleviate the chronic lack of care facilities within the UK’.
It was sold last year having been listed on the market for about £300,000.
The company said the development would provide ‘much-needed accommodation’ in the area.

Public urged to help vulnerable residents at Cumbria Community Homes in Barrow get garden of dreams

A CHARITY is calling on the kind-hearted public to help give their vulnerable residents the garden of their dreams.
Cumbria Community Homes is a Barrow-based charity whose mission is to provide a safe environment for the most vulnerable people in the community.
Based in Lawson Street, the charity opened its development in December 2020 which allows 17 vulnerable people to live independently.
The property is made up of self-contained flats and is manned round-the-clock to ensure occupants are kept safe.
Since opening 17 months ago, the tenants expressed interest at having an outdoor space to grow vegetables, socialise and learn about nature.
Eric Elrick, residential support worker at Cumbria Community Homes, set up a fundraiser for the 'wellbeing garden' - which would cost around £13k - but the page only managed to raise £100.

New housing development in Lawson Street, Barrow for vulnerable people set to be unveiled

A BARROW-based housing charity will today cut the ribbon on a development which is allowing 17 vulnerable people to live independently.
The property on Lawson Street is made up of self-contained flats and is being manned round-the-clock to ensure occupants are kept safe.
Although people had already moved in, the official opening of the building will take place today, with leader of Barrow Borough Council, Cllr Ann Thomson being given a tour.
Christine Hughes, chief executive of Cumbria Community Homes, which leases the property and is behind the opening, said the tenants were vulnerable people who were at risk of homelessness or had been exploited and abused. Many of them have learning disabilities.
