Here's where you can mountain bike at a Colorado ski resort

With Colorado ski areas shifting into summer operations, resorts are opening trails to mountain biking or will do so any day. Many utilize their chairlifts for "bike hauls," requiring the purchase of trail passes for access. Copper Mountain allows free mountain biking but charges for bike hauls. Trail access is free at Arapahoe Basin, where there is no lift-assisted biking. Most of the resorts with mountain biking operations also offer rentals, lessons and clinics.

Woodward Copper to host annual WreckTangle Challenge

Woodward Copper will host the fourth annual Woodward Copper WreckTangle Challenge at Copper Mountain Resort on Saturday, July 31.
Participants in the challenge will bounce, swing and climb their way through the Woodward WreckTangle, an outdoor obstacle course, for the title of WreckTangle champion. Competitors will race through 10 obstacles to try to record the fastest time in their age group. Age divisions include 5-6, 7-9, 10-12, 13-17 and 18 and older.
Obstacles on the course, located in the heart of Copper’s Center Village, include the cargo net, the swinging Licorice Bridge — three connected suspended, swinging tire strips that participants must navigate using their hands and feet — and the hanging 6-foot Swiss Cheese Doors with various cutout holes and hand holds that participants can use their hands and feet to navigate.

Copper Mountain Resort embraces uphill skiing with race series, daytime routes

Photo by Curtis DeVore / Copper Mountain Resort
When Copper Mountain Resort President and General Manager Dustin Lyman saw the level of demand for uphill and backcountry skiing last March, he knew Copper needed to add an uphill race series to the resort’s lineup.
Since Lyman began leading the resort at the start of the 2018-19 winter season, the Boulder native and former National Football League player has leaned into the resort’s niche as “The Athlete’s Mountain.” Along with serving as the U.S. Alpine Ski Team’s official training site and as the elite training and competition venue — via Woodward Copper Mountain Park — for park and pipe sports, Lyman believes uphill is a part of Copper’s athlete-first brand.

Hit the ice: Skating options expand for Summit County visitors during pandemic

Photo by Jack Affleck / Vail Resorts
Summit County is without question a ski and snowboard destination, but your skills on the snow could translate to the ice, and trying your hand at ice skating could improve your carving out on the hill.
“The edging is similar,” said Tara Lane, a skating instructor for the town of Breckenridge. “You have your inside edge, your bottom of your blade, which is flat, and then the outside edge. Your weight transfer and the rolling edge to edge is the same, but the difference is the bottom of a skate is much skinnier, so you move from edge to edge faster. If you’re pretty proficient on skates, you will be able to understand edge transfer, weight transfer and how to turn on the mountain better than someone who doesn’t know how to skate — and vice versa from skiing to skating.”

Wolf Creek is the first Colorado ski resort to reach 100 inches of snow

Copper Mountain opened largely thanks to snowmaking on Nov. 30, but as shown here, there wasn’t much natural snow in the area. With the exception of Wolf Creek, Colorado ski areas haven’t had great snowfall so far this season. (Curtis DeVore, provided by Copper Mountain)
Snow-starved Colorado has skiers and riders begging for powder.
Luckily, Mother Nature answered this weekend by dumping 26 inches in the southwestern part of the state.
Wolf Creek Ski Area, known for being one of the snowiest spots in the state, is now up to 122 inches for the season. It marks the first resort in Colorado and one of the first in the United States to surpass the 100-inch mark. Jackson Hole reported 129 inches on Monday morning, according to the National Weather Service.
