Students worried about how they will be assessed and graded
The decision by the Central government to postpone the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) examinations in light of the surge in COVID-19 cases has received a mixed response from students, parents, teachers and principals.
While some have hailed the government’s decision to not put children at risk, others pointed out the need for some form of assessment.
Dakshayini Kanna, principal of Harvest International School, said, “Conducting the examinations would unnecessarily put many students at risk. We have conducted three pre-board examinations in the school. It will not be a problem to assess students based on their performance in these examinations and the assessments conducted earlier in the year.” She added that earlier CBSE had two types of examinations – school-based and board-based, and it would be easy for teachers to assess students at the school level.

COVID-19: Schools in Karnataka to test teachers more frequently

They are also willing to bear the cost of vaccination for their staff
In the wake of an outbreak of COVID-19 cases in two government schools in Karnataka on Friday, managements of government and private schools are stepping up monitoring to ensure that their campuses do not become clusters.
Many managements said they were willing to bear the cost of vaccination for their teachers.
Mansoor Ali Khan, member, board of management, Delhi Public Group of Schools, said that they have been conducting COVID-19 tests for their teachers once a month since their schools reopened in January. “From now on, we will conduct tests on teachers and our staff every fortnight to ensure that our students and staff are protected,” he said.

Bengaluru schools are working with teachers and parents to help students overcome screen fatigue
The ongoing COVID-19 pandemic has not only upended the way we socialise or interact with each other, but has also altered the learning patterns of lakhs of students with online classes becoming the norm.
For the last nine months, students in private schools have been glued to their screens for hours on end where otherwise they would have been in a physical classroom interacting with their peers and teachers. The fallout is digital fatigue and eye strain.

Their concern stems from the semester-end performance of students
In a year that saw online learning take precedence, several school managements and teachers are a worried lot after evaluating the first term examination answer scripts as they feel that students’ performance is not up to the mark. Teachers say though they used several tools and tried to make online classes during the pandemic more interactive, they feel that students have not grasped the concepts.

Decision on reopening of schools likely to be taken today; many private schools have decided to stick to online classes
The Vidyagama continuous learning programme will be re-launched from January 1 in all schools — government, aided, and private — across Karnataka.
Under the programme, students can come to their school campus to attend classes in small batches. In a circular issued on Wednesday, the Department of Public Instruction said that Vidyagama was relaunched as there was a delay in the reopening of schools.
The decision on whether schools across Karnataka will reopen in January or not is likely to be taken on Thursday.
