SALT LAKE CITY Utah state workers will be expected back in their offices on Monday, May 31 unless continued teleworking has been approved. An email sent to KSL Newsradio from the office of Gov. Spencer Cox says they re still encouraged to be vigilant about good hygiene and maintaining physical distancing. Employees and their families are also strongly encouraged to get vaccinations as a way to protect themselves against the coronavirus. But mandates to wear masks at work will expire, the statement said. The continued use of Plexiglas shields will be up to the individual departments of state government. Thousands of state workers have been telecommuting, doing their jobs from home, during the months of the COVID-19 pandemic. The Utah Department of Workforce Services, for example, employs hundreds of call center workers, and many of them could continue their jobs from home. Deputy Director Nate McDonald said they want to put people where they re most efficient. ....

Without changes in policy, a report claims the risk of senior homelessness will increase in Utah. The Preserving Affordable Senior Housing Matters report finds Utah stands to lose hundreds of subsidized housing units each year as leases expire and units are converted to market-rate rentals. Utah Housing Coalition Fellow Otelo Reggy-Beane is the author of the report. He said the creation of new subsidized housing units is not keeping up with demand. We re adding about 182 units each year to the subsidized senior housing stock. We find that 120 of these units are just replacing the ones lost to subsidy expiration, Reggy-Beane said in a news media briefing on the report. ....
LAYTON UDOT will receive an additional $60 million to finish a rebuild of U.S. Highway 89 through Layton, the agency said Monday. Planners budgeted nearly half a billion dollars for the U.S. 89 rebuild project from Kaysville and Fruit Heights through Layton, when the Utah Department of Transportation asked for an extra $60 million to complete the final stretch. The Utah Transportation Commission approved the request at its meeting last week. Driver feedback leads to more money The section of U.S. 89 from S.R. 193 in north Layton to Interstate 84 had been left out of the plan because of budget constraints, but Zach Whitney with UDOT says people were concerned about finishing the entire project. ....
