Though the VA shows a drop in veteran suicides for the second year in a row in the most recent data from 2020, another group has used a different method in a portion of U.S. states and found the rate of veteran suicides could be much higher than calculated.
In Virginia, 181 veterans died by suicide in 2020 with four of five using firearms, according to the VA.
The ceremony was held in the Virginia War Memorial’s Shrine of Memory for the first time. The shrine includes the names of 175 Virginians who died during the global war on terrorism.
