U.S. National Park Service officials say an unoccupied house has collapsed into the Atlantic Ocean along North Carolina's Outer Banks.

FOR THE PIONEERS of Clallam County, life was hard. Living was difficult. Getting enough food was not easy. Traveling was treacherous. You most likely were on your own when there were medical needs.

Erosion on the Outer Banks, and Hatteras Island in particular, is nothing new. It’s a sandbar after all, a constantly shifting barrier island that acts to protect the mainland from the impact of coastal storms. But a section of Rodanthe is quickly disappearing.
