That s a new role Wood will fulfil in coming weeks having joined the Western Power franchise fielding a range of teams in the newly-formed Brisbane Premier League (BPL) T20 competition. With strong Ipswich ties and a proud country heritage, Laidley-bred Wood will encourage junior cricketers and help promote Western Power in the inaugural five-week amateur series starting in August. While yet to decide if he will play in the BPL, the Ipswich Hornets most consistent batsman appreciated another prestigious honour.

Subscriber only HAVING valuable all-rounders like Macy Hauser rising through the program is one of the reasons the Ipswich Hornets have qualified for Saturday s grand final. Macy, 15, is the only cricketer from the Hornets first year of female player development to still be in the club s Second Grade team. She started in the all-girls Hornets winter squad in 2014, becoming one of the team s go-to players in this year s Jodie Fields Shield competition. Having helped guide her side to a nailbiting, last over semi-final win over Sunshine Coast last weekend, Macy is one of the teenagers with a promising future.

Subscriber only IN her 18th year as club president, Leanne Haley is waiting to see who returns after last year s COVID-challenged Ipswich hockey season. The early signs are Norths will field teams in most divisions with C-Grade boys and R2 women the major team concerns at this time of the year. A lot of our juniors coming through we are not sure where we are putting them yet until we see who else turns up, Haley said. With COVID last year . . . some people decided to come back and some people didn t; it will be interesting to see which of those who didn t choose not to play again.

Subscriber only EIGHT Ipswich Hornets teenagers will receive another valuable opportunity in their cricket development when they represent their region in this week s Queensland under-15 championships. Arya Pal, Emily Titmarsh, Felicity Koch, Laura Brown, Sarah Walker and Trinity Doyle will line up for Southern Blaze in the titles scheduled to start on Monday at Redlands Cricket Club. Southern Blaze covers the SEQ and Gold Coast areas. Jasmine Lewis and Eloise McKenzie will represent Western Swelter (South West and Darling Downs area). The championships feature the best under-15 female cricketers from around the state. The other regions are defending champions City Fever (Brisbane North), Coastal Burners (Sunshine Coast and Wide Bay), Central Infernos (Mackay and Rockhampton) and Northern Flames (Cairns and Townsville).
