A Town of Berlin Wetlands Protection Bylaw will be one of this year’s warrant articles at the second session of the annual town meeting, on Monday, May 17. The key term here is “wetlands” and the key syllable is “wet.”
Wet means covered or saturated with water or some other liquid. In the case of wetlands, we could substitute the word as “waterlands.”
So why would citizens vote to protect waterlands? Except in large cities and towns where public water supplies rely on surface reservoirs, many municipalities rely on ground water supplies pumped from public and private wells to serve the community.  And most citizens drink water or use water for food preparation and some cases take regular showers or baths. These waterlands assist in allowing rainwater to recharge the groundwater and provide a safe ample water source for citizens. ....
