Prosecutors will seek death penalty in slaying of grandparents

By John HopkinsThe Virginian-Pilot CHESAPEAKE - Talion Hawkins pleaded with police in March 2006, after he confessed to detectives that he had killed his grandparents in their home in the Indian River section of the city. "All I ask is that you all please help me stay alive," he told detectives. "Jail time... I will stay in jail the rest of my life, but I'd rather live. You understand?" Prosecutors said Monday they will seek the death penalty against Hawkins. The 19-year-old is scheduled to stand trial in Chesapeake Circuit Court . . .

Two sentenced for Chesapeake home invasions

CHESAPEAKE A Portsmouth man and his former girlfriend were sentenced Tuesday for a rash of brazen home invasions in 2011 that stretched across Hampton Roads - and cost one victim two of his fingers. During an extended hearing in Chesapeake, Tyquine Lee was sentenced to 59 years in prison on top of 19 years he received in Norfolk. A jury in Virginia Beach has recommended an additional 34 years.
