Buffalo, N.Y. (WBEN) - The cameras are on and the citations are ready as the controversial Buffalo school zone speed camera program kicks-in again Monday.
A grace period that had been in place has expired and those driving in excess of 15 mph in the 18 active school zones will be sent citations and fines will be issued for those who are driving 26 mph or faster.
"The school zone cameras are working," Buffalo Mayor Byron Brown told WBEN in an interview Sunday on Hardline. Brown says speeds are down in the school zones and the program answers a call made by residents who were concerned about speeding near schools.

BUFFALO, N.Y. (WKBW) — City of Buffalo Parking Commissioner Kevin Helfer announced Friday the School Zone Safety Program will be reactivated on Monday, February 1.
The reactivation is in conjunction with the reopening of schools across the city. Officials say speed zone camera citations will not be issued during the acclimation period, which runs through February, to give drivers ample time to adjust to the speed limits.
"Flashing beacons will be activated and flashing throughout the school day in each of these areas to help acclimate motorists to the change in speed limit during school hours, which is reduced to 15 miles per hour in these zones to protect students. The school zone speed limit is in effect for the hours listed under the speed limit panel. Motorists should also be aware that police can also enforce the posted speed limit to protect our children," a release from the city says.

Locals with special needs run the show at Tree of Life's new coffee shop

After many years of both professional and volunteer work with young adults with special needs, Beth Newton conceived the idea for a place where people with disabilities could gain steady work experience and serve the community with a smile.
Newton, who used to teach special education at Loudoun County Public Schools and most recently led the special needs ministry at Cornerstone Chapel, brought her idea to Paul Smith, founder and executive director of local nonprofit Tree of Life Ministries.
TOL’s several specialized branches include Still Waters, which cares for children of parents with special needs and where Newton volunteered for nine years.
