[MZ커뮤니티 보고서] 이자연｜대중문화 탐구인 언제부턴가 온라인 여초 커뮤니티에 자주 등장하는 단어 하나가 있다. 바로 ‘커뮤사세’다. 커뮤사세란 ‘온라인 커뮤니티'와 ‘그들이 사는 세상(그사세)’의 합성어로, 커뮤니티 생활에 너무 몰입한 나머지 현실과 동떨어져 세상물정 모르는 언행을 가리킨다. 예를 들어 회사 업무가 조금만 맞지 않아도 그만두라고 하거나, 친구와의 작은 불화에도 연을 끊으라는 말은 커뮤사세 조언에 해당한다. 화면 안에서만큼은 ‘사이다 썰’처럼 비치더라도, 대책 없이 일을 그만두는 게 능사가 아니고 인간관계는 언제 어디서 변할지 모르기 때문이다. 짧은 네 글자엔 현실성을 잊지 말라는 견고한 채찍질이 느껴진다. 그런데 아주 오묘한 건 커뮤사세 구별은 유독 엠제트(MZ)세대 여성들이 활동하는 커뮤니티에 자주 보인다는 점이다. 인간관계 고충이나 학교, 직장 생활 같은 일상에 대입하는 건 물론, 달글(댓글이 달리는 글)까지 만들어져 특정 행동이 커뮤사세에 해당하는지 아닌지 판단하는 광장이 형성되기도 했다. 심지어 민낯 출근, 직장 내 비혼 의사 밝히기, 탈코르셋 등 여성 해방과 관련한 일들도 이 심판을 피할 길은 없다. 남초 커뮤니티도 이토록 세세하게 ‘커뮤사세’를 따질까? 여러 곳을 찾아보니 관련 게시글은 2~3개 남짓이고 그조차도 다른 커뮤니티에서 가져온 것이어서 커뮤사세를 다루는 자체 콘텐츠는 거의 없는 거나 마찬가지였다. 이따금 댓글에 보이는 것도 단어의 뜻을 묻는 게 대부분이었다. 손가락 모양을 여기저기서 찾아내 수정하라며 생떼를 부리던 행위는 현실에서 보편적 공감을 얻기보다 온라인 커뮤니티에서만 과열되었던 것임에도 남초 커뮤니티에서는 커뮤사세라는 한계선이 결코 작동하지 않았다. 정리해보면 이렇다. 남성들은 하고 싶으면 그냥 하고 마는데, 여성들은 커뮤사세 알고리즘을 바짝 작동시켜 해도 되는지 하면 안 되는지 스스로를 검열한다. 이 움츠러듦에는 역사가 있다. 트위터에서는 머리가 쇼트커트라는 이유로 한 카페 면접에서 불이익을 얻었다는 후일담이 들려오고, 민낯으로 출근했다가 오늘 안색이 안 좋네, 표정이 안 좋네 하는 잔소리를 들었다는 이야기가 블라인드에 쏟아진다. 수많은 여성들은 정체된 사회 안에서 무력감을 느끼며 온·오프라인에 동일한 자아를 설계할 수 없다는 것을 경험으로서 깨달아갔다. 현실에서는 혹여 불이익을 받지 않을까 나를 압박하는 것을 수용하고 말지만, 그럴 걱정이 없는 곳에서나 내가 하고 싶은 말과 태도를 취한다. 커뮤사세 용어의 사회적 맥락을 되짚으니 온라인 커뮤니티 속 여성들의 필연적 모순이 이해는 된다. 그럼에도 여성들이 이 텁텁한 자가 검열로부터 벗어났으면 좋겠다. 온라인의 나와 오프라인의 나. 내가 원하는 삶을 사는 건 어디에 있는 나일까? 우리는 이 질문에 더 가까워져야 한다.
