first let s bring in our correspondent deborah feyerick who has been all over this since yesterday. tell me what, if anything, have investigators been able to glean from surveillance from the area? reporter: one of the things that they are doing, brooke, is they are trying to get as much surveillance video as they can. they are going to businesses and homes that might have private security systems. they are trying to get any sort of image of these three individuals, but we do know according to the commander of the major crimes task force is in fact they are getting some good leads. there is forensic evidence that was recovered from the scene, the crime scene, specifically as part of the autopsy, and they are expediting lab analysis and anything that they are finding at the scene. the commander referenced fingerprints and dna, that kind of detail that perhaps will help them narrow the identity. deb, forgive me for interrupting, juggling a couple of major stories this afternoon. le ....
Deb, what do we know about the police officer from the fox lake area killed, and what do we know about how he was killed? what we do know is, he was a 32 year veteran of the police force. a woman who spoke earlier was tearful saying, he was a good man, loved his job, his community. we re told by sources that he saw these three individuals and approached them, because he wanted to question them, something didn t appear right. they began to run, he radioed for backup and backup actually was on its way as he alone began to engage these three men. the responding officers actually heard the gunshot. the gunshot presumably that killed this police officer. when they arrived they found he was shot, pronounced dead there, on the scene. ....
House. so i said i would do it. when snyder arrived, he saw that there had been a two-vehicle accident, apparently, a jeep collided with an abandoned car that had broken down and was parked on the side of the highway. when i was met by the deputy, he informed me that one person is deceased, the female passenger in the red jeep, and the other vehicle that was struck was unoccupied. i could see the ambulance personnel working on a male who was covered in blood. and he was screaming. the jeep driver, steve hollermann, was rushed to a nearby hospital. steve s passenger, his 41-year-old wife, deborah, was dead. everybody knew her. i mean, she was that well loved. there was just disbelief and shock. if you got to know deb, you liked deb. ....
Sweat is now in police custody. he s been talking to authorities seemingly nonstop, but new details are emerging on richard matt who was shot and killed last friday. the buffalo news reports that he mailed a letter to his daughter writing promised i would see you on the outside. i m a man of my word. what more do we know about this her, deb. it seems like a clear sign. it appears that richard matt was so confident he would actually elude escape that he thought he might be able make it 350 miles from where he was at clinton correctional all the way to buffalo. there s no indication that his daughter had any idea that her father was planning this escape. smart according to the news she asked for protections. she was very concerned. this was a man largely not in ....
So if you snitch and say this is where they keep their codes, their weapons, they don t want the gangs inside the prison. was there any inclination among i say the authorities there or the higher ups that this was going on? you knew it as a prisoner, your fellow prisoners knew it but was it sort of accepted at the top? i believe there was an officer on that said there s no secret inside a prison. everybody knows everything. so if the warden the superintendent did not know what was going on inside his prison then he wasn t doing his job correctly because you re supposed to know what s going on inside those walls. deb, tell us a little bit more about this sledgehammer. well again, all that s under investigation. i had spoken to so many different people. the one thing i want to say is that even if there were several corrupt correction officials that were in there, they will be dealt with. obviously they re going to look for patterns. the problem is that what was going on at clin ....
