POLICE arrested more than 50 people and seized more than 50 vehicles in just two weeks of a crackdown on dangerous drivers. In response to community concerns raised during lockdown, officers carried out more checks to ensure vehicles on Wiltshire's roads are legal and the drivers are in a fit state to be behind the wheel. Between January 15 and February 1, 23 people have been arrested for drink driving and 25 for drug driving. THE ARMED officer who shot a gunman in the leg acted proportionately, a watchdog report has found. Robber Howard Jones who had minutes earlier stolen a refrigerated lorry, was shot by the unnamed Wiltshire Police officer last June – after the 59-year-old fired two ball bearings at another policeman. The Independent Office for Police Conduct, which has today published its findings, said the non-fatal shooting of Jones had been “necessary and proportionate”.
