TPS Superintendent, Teachers And Staff Press For Higher Vaccine Priority

Tulsa Public Schools
With the district a frequent target of criticism from Gov. Kevin Stitt for not offering in-person instruction due to high local rates of COVID-19 infection, representatives from Tulsa Public Schools administration, faculty and support staff issued a joint statement Thursday calling for educators to be placed higher in the state s vaccine priority structure.
All across the country, states have prioritized teachers and other school team members for the COVID-19 vaccine. We simply believe Oklahoma should do the same, which is why we continue to advocate for teachers, and our team, to be a higher priority in our state, reads the statement, issued jointly by TPS Superintendent Dr. Deborah Gist, Tulsa Classroom Teachers Association President Shawna Mott-Wright, and American Federation of Teachers Local 6049 President Nancy Leonard. ....

Healthier Oklahoma Coalition
Children aged 5 to 17 make up a higher proportion of new COVID-19 infections in Oklahoma than at any time in the pandemic so far, a phenomenon one expert says is worth monitoring.
It looks like about 14% of the positive cases are happening in school age children, and that s the highest it s ever been, said Dr. David Kendrick, founder and CEO of MyHealth Access Network and professor of medical informatics at the University of Oklahoma School of Community Medicine, on a Tuesday press conference held virtually by the Healthier Oklahoma Coalition.  ....

Governor Makes Major Changes To School Quarantine Rules, Education Leaders Concerned

By: Jonathan Cooper
OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. -
Governor Kevin Stitt made big changes to Oklahoma’s quarantine guidelines for students, with the goal of keeping more kids in the classroom, but other state leaders have voiced their concerns.
The changes come as the state surpasses 2,800 total deaths with the state reporting 29 new virus-related deaths Tuesday.
State Superintendent Joy Hofmeister is critical of the governor s new guidelines, saying that while she agrees in-person school is critical, COVID-19 is still rampant in the state.
The ramifications of the pandemic on education have been challenging and severe. While this option underscores the need for mask requirements in school, I cannot in good conscience support ignoring quarantine guidelines from the CDC and other infectious disease experts. There is no doubt we all want our students and teachers to be safely in the classroom, but COVID is raging in Oklahoma. In-person instruction is critical, and so ....

Green Country Educators React To Governor's Quarantine Policy Changes For Schools

Green Country Educators React To Governor’s Quarantine Policy Changes For Schools
Governor Kevin Stitt changed the state’s quarantine guidelines for students to get them back to in-person learning, but not everyone agrees with his latest policy change.
School districts and educators were quick to respond to the changes.
Stitt cited new data on student performance and student safety.
Schools that enforce the use of masks will not have to quarantine potential exposures unless they re showing symptoms. This is what s best for our students, period. End of story, Stitt said.
He said with an increased number of students failing classes, it s vital to get them back in schools. ....
