She was born May 5, 1926, in Proctor, Vt., to Winnifred Locke and A. Hawley Churchill of Brandon, Vt. She grew up in Brandon on a self-sufficient farm with a water-powered sawmill, sugarbush, gardens, trout hatchery, Morgan horses and Jersey cows. She graduated from Brandon High School in 1943.
